But this was kind of planned, because by the time I start block 5 of the blanket, I'm going to need a longer needle. So I ordered a 5.5 mm 60" ChiaoGoo needle, and am waiting for it to show up before I get really working on the blanket again, though I will take it to the in-laws (common-law in-laws, but easier to type), to finish block 4 over the Christmas holiday.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-T9OxRdfDfKM/TvPYpKSFHGI/AAAAAAAAAF4/pSLko0OzLtk/s200/WP_000049.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5689128955945491554" />The wily sock is almost finished the gusset, which for me is pretty darn quick, since I started it last Friday, the 16th. It's a blatant rip-off of a friend's sock, momo. I just fell in love with hers and it wouldn't get out of my head. I'm using Regia 4-ply Color 5030, silt, in 2-row stripes with plain white. I hope to finish the sock over the weekend as well, and possibly have a pair before the end of the year. If it does go over, it'll certainly be done by the week after.

I think I've finally figured out a formula for my socks. On 2 mm needles like this one, I need 80 stitches, in Regia 4-ply I'm getting 10.5 stitches to the inch. My feet are 9" around, so it should work. For each needle size up or down from 2 mm, I'll add or subtract 4 stitches. I hope to knit a few pairs over the next couple of months to see how this works out. Standard flap heel, though I may try the sweet tomato heel as well.

Blankets are big!

Yeah, I've started my first blanket, and am just now starting to realize that blankets are big, and that's a lot of square inches to be making by hand.

I'm making the Moderne Log Cabin blanket in 3 shades of blue and a grey in Red Heart Comfort, because it's not a bad feel for acrylic, and I can get a lot of it without breaking the bank. The picture to the left is where the first 3 blocks join up.

The corner isn't quite straight, but I'm also still figuring out how to pick up stitches that looks good to me. I think I have it figured out now, but I still have about 31 ridges, so 62 rows, left to go before I finish block 3 (the dark blue). I had hoped to finish that block today, but it's already starting to look more like tomorrow.

In the same vein, I was kind of hoping to finish this for Christmas, not as a gift, but as a handy deadline so we can actually use this blanket this season, as I'm hoping it will fit on our queen size bed (what was I thinking?!) But maybe for New Year's Day instead? We're looking at spending 4-5 days for Christmas at his parent's place, so lots of knitting time, I hope.

I went down to the new (well, as of either this last June, or the one before) location of the Halifax Farmer's Market (oldest in North America, from the signs), and picked up a pretty skein of yarn from Lismore Sheep Farms. This picture is a bit more neon than the skein actually is, but my phone likes to emphasize the reds/pinks:

I will try to post more updates on the blanket, and other things as they cross my needles. Well, I happened to have 8 oz of hemp sitting around, that I got fro Aurora Silk a few years ago, and played with once, but then put away and mostly forgot about.

So I got inspired, and grabbed it and my Trindle, and started spinning. I'm wet spinning it at about a laceweight singles. I figure I'll spin maybe a half ounce, then 2-ply it, and then cable as many of that together as I need to get a size close to the driveband once my wheel arrives.

And here's a closeup, with a quarter for scale:

I'll have to find some time in the next few weeks to finish it up, then start plying it.

Progress...

Well, I've managed to get some knitting done. I'm knitting it in Fleece Artist BFL 2/8 in well, what I think are Mermaid and Amethyst, as the LYSs here don't actually label the colors.... so it's a guessing game, honestly.

Click on either for a bigger picture:

I'm going to try and keep track of my progress here on the blog, and will also try to take pictures (something I tend to forget to do).

Last night I stayed up until 1:15 am to watch both the inside and outside torches be lit, to really be able to cast on once the flame started. I did manage to get 4 rows of the left front started before I dragged my arse to bed.

This morning I've so far purled the hem turning row (rather than do a sewed folded hem as per the pattern, I'm doing a knitted folded hem), and am 1 row past that. I hope to get up to the small stripes for the waist shaping by tonight. That will be a bit of a challenge in itself, as I also have to get around 6-7 hours of work done, plus some chores, and all the other fun stuff. At least the boyfriend (Conn) is working this evening, so I can sit and knit along with some classic rock.

Hope to post again tonight with pictures of my progress!

I weighed what I have of the second ply on the spindle yesterday, and was nicely surprised to see I have about 7 grams already spun! I just weighed it, there's 2.1 oz or 61 g left. I think that's reasonable for me to get done.

Here's a couple pictures. First is of the roving, of course. This is just the largest bit of it, not all 2.1 oz. I've already separated some of it out to be drafted. It's called Rose, I believe, from Ashland Bay Company, and it is a nice blend of grey and pink mostly, with bits of white, black and a dark rose throughout. I find that spinning it as fine as I do makes it hard to see the variations, but once it's plied up, you can still see a bit of the changing of thet colors, which I like. :)

This second picture is of the singles on my spindle. This is my first spindle I've owned, given to me at a class I took about 3 years ago. Well, actually, I did a tiny bit of spinning prior to that, but this is the first decent spindle I've owned. I've since made several more from dowels and toy wheels, they're somewhere in my bins with yarn on them. I really should dig those out sometime as well. Maybe if (hah!) I get this spinning done before the end of the Tour....

Okay, so I got started a little late. I simply forgot over the weekend, and didn't have time yesterday.

But tonight after both jobs, I managed to get about 10-15 yards spun of the merino/silk. My boyfriend, Conn, also works in the same room as me here at the apartment, and with the fans going, part of my drafted roving got blown over almost into his lap, and I pulled it back right away, as he was on a call (he does tech support), but his next time on mute, he's like, ooh, you got the fluffy soft stuff. He likes petting the fiber too.

Ended up breaking the yarn once, but I got it back together with no wastage, yay! I hate it when I end up having to take out a length of partially-spun yarn because it just isn't working back together properly.

Some of the yarn ended up a bit thinner than I wanted, but ah well, it's part of the character, eh?

Here's hoping I can get into more of a pattern of spinning as the days go on. I'm going to have to frog the one I had restarted, as I think a 2 mm needle would be much better than the 2.5 mm that I had been using. I find the fabric just a touch thin for a man's socks.

In the Tour de Fleece that I just signed up for a day or two ago, my goal is to do at least 15 minutes of spinning a day on the Ashland Bay merino/silk that I bought about 2 years ago and is the oldest in my fiber stash. I am spinning laceweight (I can't seem to get heavier than fingering for the life of me), and will be knitting Branching Out on Knitty. I have spun a 2-ply, about 225 yards, and have that much knitted already (yes, I know, bad me), and want to get at least that much more spun up so I can get a decent scarf length.

Hope to have pictures up at some point, but am typing this as a way to procrastinate on work. Been working a part time on top of my full time since May, so this blog sadly has hit the bottom of my long pile of things to do, as have most of my hobbies except chainmaille, as I'm trying to get a very large maille project done for labor day, and it's going to be a very close race.

So there's the brief update :)

Challah cover, finally!

Well, it's not tomorrow, but I did get a picture of it. The border pattern I got from online, and I charted the letters myself from a alefbet I found online as well.

Finished object dance.

Yay, the challah cover (crochet part) is done! I had originally got this yarn back in May, by getting a friend to camp on the website, since I was camping that weekend the yarn was on sale. I had 3 colors in mind, this is what he managed to get.

It's a lot pinker than I expected from the picture (Click on Satisfaction above). I was hoping for more reds. But since they're for mom, it doesn't really matter; I just hope she likes pink. But she'll like them anyways, since I made them; moms are nice that way :D

I'm doing a plain stockinette, since the yarn provides pattern enough on its own. I originally tried 72 stitches, but 64 seems to be working better; I'll know in another inch or two when I can try it on past the ball of my foot. I'm doing toe up, since I prefer that method with special yarns, so I can use them up. Although from what I've seen on January One, 1 skein will get me nearly a knee-high, so if I end up with enough left over, I'll either use it as part of a second pair, or will see if I can get anklets or something from it. Using 2 mm needles that I got as part of a sock needle set down at Windsor Buttons in Boston while I was there for the first week of October.

Finished Object!

Finally have a finished object. I'm going merrily through my way on the Peacock Shawl, row 117, and suddenly I realize things aren't lining up. So I go back to check, and find this:

Now that sucks.... that's at least 3 rows back, which are around 220 stitches each, or a little more, at this point, being double the stitches as per odd-numbered row I'm on. I've already gone back a quarter row, and will come back to it another time now that I've documented it, so I'll remember what went wrong and how to get back there. I considered tinking the few stitches vertically, but with having to put in at least 3 YOs and some other stitches, I'm just gonna head back... good thing it only takes me marginally longer to un-knit than it does to knit on this thing... I've had lots of practice by now. :(

Well, go figure... was searching for knitting needles, and found the bloody pattern for my shawl (in profile picture). Was sitting on top of my basket under a bag of stuff. While I facepalm, since that was a result of my 'cleaning' a few weeks ago, I'm very happy to have found it again.

I've also been brewing ideas for more socks.... got one started that's gone through 2 patterns, then ripped... now I'm thinking my first 2-color project.... white cables on a colored background... Still have another sock on the go, the blueish one, and have the yellow/brown waiting to go on the needles again. Then there's the 2 shirts in progress :P

Just waiting for work to download, then back at that for the day.... and a friend in Ohio wants to commission me for kilt hose for him, soon as he gets his tax return in another week or two. So I'm hoping to spend part of tomorrow fondling yarns so I can choose one :) He wants it simple, but I'm gonna throw in a couple cables or braids for my own sanity, so I don't get bored from nothing but knit stitches like the last kneehighs I did. I'm also thinking of asking to get those back, and possibly frogging those and redoing them. My brain can't seem to wrap around the fact that socks need to be made *smaller* so that they stretch around the foot. So I'd likely subtract at least a good inch, maybe 1.5, from the circumference of her socks all the way down.

Socks and shawl

Here's finally a picture of the two sets of socks I'm working on. The upper sock is Dicentra Designs colorway Kingsfoil knit on 2 mm needles, and the lower sock is Opal Handpainted #21 (half price at the LYS when I was there) on 2.25 mm needles.

Since that picture, however, I decided that since I only have one skein of either yarn, I frogged the upper sock, and plan to frog the bottom one, and do toe-up socks, so I can match the length of the socks and use up the whole skeins, or close to it. I've gotten the first Dicentra sock toe started, about 4-6 rows from starting the foot. The Opal will get going eventually, although I think I'm going to wait and do those on 2 mm as well, as I feel the 2.25mm isn't making as thick a fabric as I would like. I also want the 2.25 needles for the Kroy Socks yarn I have, so I can try Knitty's Falling Leaves socks. The yarn is Muslin at the moment, but I'll be dying them some shade of green after the socks are knit.

On the Peacock Feathers front, I've gotten to row 92, I believe, in the third or fourth chart. I'm not sure, because I can't find the pattern! I went to PEI with a couple friends a few weeks ago, and took the pattern and shawl with me to show friends, but after I got home, I remember dumping a bunch of stuff in one spot. Then when I went to look for the pattern and shawl a few days ago, I found the shawl and needles no problem, but the pattern is missing. I've yet to do an exhaustive search, but am emailing the lady who's place we stayed at, to see if I may have forgotten it there.

Anyways, there's a picture I got of it before that trip, at my friend's again, stretched out to see half the pattern. I have at least 4 YO mistakes in there, where I've forgotten to YO, then fudged it on the next row, but they're thankfully not that visible. I just hope I find the pattern so I can keep going on this, as I was having fun with it, and still want to do at least one more in a different color. I've yet to decide which color.

Yay for pictures!

Laceweight goodness...

Well, I finally spun up that 30/70 silk/merino into approx. 215 yards of laceweight 2-ply goodness. It's a pinky grey, which I normally don't like, but it's all MINE!!

After looking at several patterns and trying out a few, I've decided on Knitty's Branching Out, and am knitting it with 3 repeats on 2.75 mm needles. I'm only halfway through the first repeat, but it looks like it will come out well.

One thing I've noticed, though, about my spinning is I really tend to overspin. The first ply of this definitely has more twist than the second ply, and so the yarn is a bit stiffer than I would have liked. Good thing is, though, that I have lots of the original 100g left (the ball of 2-ply is 23g). So I can play with making a second ball of laceweight. I also want to try other colorways from Ashland Bay. :) Or maybe from ebay, where I've also found several colorways in the 30/70 I want to try, soon as I get some cash.

I'll update with pictures hopefully Tuesday, as Mondays are when I get to my friend's place with her camera.

Lace!

I got the socks finished and washed, and they were almost dry when I gave them to her. Forgot that wool takes a long time to dry, apparently, cause I haven't used it much before now. She loves them, although they're a touch big. She's gonna try throwing em in the washer and dryer to shrink em a bit. I hope it works. I must have had my gauge off a quarter stitch or so.

But, to cheer myself up, I picked up the pattern for the Peacock Feathers shawl today right after work, and started it at SCA fight practice tonight!! I'm so excited to be starting my very first lace project. I've never done YOs or read charts before, so that's been quite interesting.

My biggest problem will be to remember not to expect much in the way of looks until it's blocked. I know it'll look like crap til then, but my brain keeps expecting to see something.

I'm at row 15 so far, and hope to get to 29 or so tonight, or halfway up Chart 1. I'm off work tomorrow, so I should get lots done over the weekend.

I also am doing Fetching in Bernat Satin, and found out you can get 3 gloves from 1 ball, so I'll buy another ball of blue tomorrow, probably, so I can finish this pair and have enough for a future pair. Maybe a Mother's Day gift?

The sock in the Kingsfoil is still only at row 5 of the ribbing. I'm not sure if it's large enough for my foot; I'm doing 84 stitches on 2mm needles. I was aiming for the larger size of Jaywalker, but I think now that I see how short the color switches are, I'm going to do yet another plain stockinette sock, but maybe with some simple lace or eyelets, now that I know how to make those :D

I also bought some Opal handpainted (color 21) at the LYS; it's on half price, and there were 5 or so skeins, but I just bought one, as my budget's tight this month because of not working for a whole week so far. But this shawl will keep my interest for some time, I know, so I will try my best not to buy anything else til March.

Well, off to the laces! :P

I'm obviously not too good at keeping this updated, eh?

I'm making kneehigh piggy-toe socks for my friend's birthday. I started them once I got her measurements on Xmas eve, and am about halfway down the gussets of the second sock. I got a lot of knitting done today. I stopped the first sock a little short of the toe section, as I want to make sure I get the toes the same, as I've never done separate toes before.

I'm knitting these in Kroy Socks - Paint Box on 2.5 and 2.25 mm needles. I'm hoping to get to the same spot as the first sock tonight, then work on the toes tomorrow. I hope to hand these to her Thursday night, as I'm unable to make her party this weekend. Her birthday's the 12th.

After that, I got a few projects lined up. I got my Dicentra yarn in Kingsfoil from Crown Mountain Farms last Friday, and bought a set of 5 Pony 2 mm needles today, and am on the second row of ribbing to try grumperina's Jaywalkers. I'm trying for the larger size, given the smaller needles. I'm not sure if this yarn will work in that pattern, but I'll frog it if necessary.

I also bought yarn today for the Peacock Feathers shawl, which will be my first foray into lace. Might as well jump in deep. I bought 2 balls of Zephyr in Basil; after I got back home, I realized there was a color called Peacock, but I don't think the store had it, as there was only a smallish basket of the Zephyr. I must see if she'll order in some for me.

The store is Tangled Skeins in Dartmouth, and I've only been going there the last 3 weeks or so, but I hope to build a rapport there with the 'regulars' as it were. I'm on the shy side, but I'd really like to become part of the knitting community around here.

Well, back to these gussets. I hope to get pictures of the finished socks Thursday evening when I present them.

98.54 miles to go...

Well, I signed up for the 100 Miles by April 1 challenge, which I needed as a kick in the rear, as I've been neglecting my walking for the last 3 months or so. I went for my first walk today, and one of my regular routes is 1.46 miles, so that's what I did today to warm up. After a week or two, depending on weather, I hope to get up to the 1.8-ish mile route. I figure if I walk every weekday, I can take weekends off and still make the goal.

Edit: Just checked, and it's 105 miles to get to Pictou, Nova Scotia, so I'm going to try for 105 miles by April 1, then hopefully keep adding from there, see how far I can walk this year :D

Well, the knitting continues. Got the first of the two-color wool socks done tonight at sewing night, and I think I'll start my sister's anklets, get the first done in that. Will try to get the socks back after Xmas to get pictures of them.

My sister's anklets will be done in Eco-Fil, which is 75/25 cotton/acrylic.

Bedtime now.

New life...

Well, let's breathe some new life into this blog, shall we?

This was the first blog I tried out, as evidenced by my first 3 posts from just over a year ago. I've since gotten into LiveJournal, and have been posting there since February.

However, last week I decided to learn to knit socks, and have discovered a whole world out there involving socks. I've decided that LJ just wasn't a suitable method for talking about my knitting, as it's going to take over my life for the next several months, I feel. So that will be for the rest of my adventures, and this will be for pretty much knitting, spinning that turns into knitting, and maybe some crocheting if I get around to doing much.

I saw a lady on the 9th at a Salvation Army kettle at the store knitting socks, and for some reason, this really grabbed me, although I've looked at socks before and thought them too complicated. But I've slowly been increasing my skill in knitting, learning increases and decreases last year, and felt I wanted to learn socks now.

I bought yarn and needles (my first time on DPNs) on the 10th, started my first sock around 6pm, and 24 hours later was ready to turn the heel. Helped that work's been really slow this last week, so I got a couple hours done Monday at work. Took me 4 times to turn the heel with a friend's help, and finished the toe Tuesday at work, and got the second sock finished Wed evening. It was on 4 mm needles, in Patons Classic Wool, dark grey. I used Canadian Living's Amazing Feets pattern, size large. I hope to get pictures up sooner or later; I don't have a digital camera yet :(

Then I started some socks in Bernat Cool Crochet, a cotton/nylon blend, on 3.25 mm needles. They're my Ice Cream socks, as I used Neopolitan with the ribbing, heel and toe in Chocolate. I decided to make this pattern up, basing it on gauge and my measurements. It was my first time using 2 colors, and learning the short row heel.

I have the first halfway done, then realized how soon Xmas is coming up, so started knitty.com's Fetching pattern in Bernat Satin Sapphire on the 4mm needles. I got the left hand finished Saturday, then started what I thought was the right hand, but realized later that night that it was another left hand; I'd turned the cables the wrong direction. So after thinking about it for a while, I put that glove on another set of needles to hold it, and started the right-hand glove from the other end of the yarn. Got that finished yesterday (Sunday) after about 5 hours of knitting. They go to my father's wife for Xmas.

I gave myself and my needles 5 minutes of a break while I got water, then cast on another sock in the Classic Wool for my sister's fiance. 4mm needles, 48 stitches. Started that about 6:30 last night, using dark blue for the ribbing, heel and toe and light grey for the body. I'm about to turn the heel now. I'm using a short row heel for this one, as I prefer it to the flap. It looks like another day without any work, so I get paid to knit! Gotta love it. I hope the week turns out this way.

I still have a pair of anklets to make for my sister after this, so here's hoping I have time here at work to get those done.

Nothing like jumping in with both feet (hah!) eh?

Well, the dress fits, and my ride is on the way to take me to the event. I like it, despite the couple mistakes there are in it. *shrugs* it happens.

I've been having problems figuring out how to do this blogging thing...
